Hot Curling Irons

Many women use hot curling irons to style their hair. Often, they do this after blow drying which is a one-two punch of heat to your tresses. In the past, heat styling was considered damaging for hair. It still can be, if done too frequently or not done correctly. However there are various ways to protect your hair from heat damage and even reverse damage that has already occurred. The first thing you should do is evaluate your current curling iron to see if it is right for your hair.

If your hair seems fried and damaged, you probably need to change irons. Ceramic irons are ideal for damaged hair because they help seal in moisture and smooth the cuticle. Another tool to consider buying is a tourmaline dryer. These dryers work much faster than the traditional kind, which means less damage. And, they cause the water drops in your hair to absorb into the strands because the tourmaline generated negative ions break them from normal sized drops into miniscule particles. This means your hair retains the moisture it needs and you've got a head start on protecting against iron damage.

You should always use a heat protecting serum or spray before turning on your blow dryer or touching your tresses with a hot iron. These products can actually help improve hair quality especially when used with tourmaline and ceramic tools. They can be used in conjunction with your favorite styling products like mousses, gels and hair sprays for example. Most of these products are made to nourish hair and leave it shiny and manageable in addition to guarding it from the ravages of high heat.

To reverse damage done by hot curling irons, get a regular trim. Once every month or two, have your hair stylist snip the dead ends off your hair. Or, go bold with a trendy short cut. After you've removed damaged ends you can rejuvenate hair with either a salon or home deep conditioning treatment. There are hot oil treatments and thermal conditioners that penetrate the entire hair shaft for the highest level of strand repair. A regular deep conditioner should be used on a weekly basis, and if your hair is dry or damaged consider a light leave-in conditioner applied after your normal shampoo and rinse-out conditioner.
